19. What is the definition of banam

The Banam is an ancient fiddle played by the Santals as an instrument. The banam is the most revered of the 14 different instruments that they play. As an accompaniment to their songs and dances such as Dasae, Sohrae, Don, Lagre and Karam, the Santals play this typically one-stringed instrument.

Different forms of banam are difficult to classify. They may be covered by Tendor Banam, Dhodro Banam, Huka Banam, and a host of other names among the Santals. But the Santals tend to classify their instruments, instead of structural elements, they classify it into ornamentation. Moreover, there is an extreme variety because each instrument reflects its manufacturer's artistic vision.

The importance of the banam to the Santals is well expressed in the in-instruments artwork.  In many cases, these elaborate carvings are the major part of the work.  Human figures are a motive that is particularly important.
